Saving for Early Retirement

Everybody would like to retire early, and that means something different for each of us. Sandy started thinking about saving for early retirement when she was just 22. She didn’t plan to retire early, but wanted to be sure she could retire at some point. Charles was 40 before he and Cindy even began to think about retirement.

Retirement is normally thought of as beginning at 65 or a little later. Saving for early retirement would mean retirement at any age before 65, say at 60 or 55 or even at 50. Some jobs provide retirement benefits after 20 or 30 years of service. Many government, police, fire and armed forces career jobs provide for that. Therefore, if you start in your early 20s, you could retire in your 50s.

Or, in any career, if you start saving and investing right away, make good investments and keep your expenses down, you could retire early. Those investments should be tax deferred while they are growing, and ideally should earn 10% to 12% or more on average.
