Having enough money to retire on seems like a huge, almost impossible, task when you start. Some union contracts and some companies provide retirement plans. They generally take a few dollars out of each paycheck and put them into a group retirement plan. The more common ones are 401-K plans, 403-B and 457 plans, IRAs and Simple IRAs. All contributions are tax deductible and the money in the accounts grows tax deferred, so these plans for saving for retirement have good tax benefits, too.

Most of these qualified retirement plans have many investment choices: Ten to 20 different mutual funds is common. Bobby and Tina each joined their company’s retirement plan and started saving for their retirement. They looked at all the choices offered and each chose five or six funds that had records of good growth – 8% to 10%, even 12% a year on average. Based on that, they expected to be able to retire in comfort in another 30 years.
